A story rooted
in community.

Formed in 2008 and formally registered in 2009, Siyakhathala emerged as a vital response to the HIV/AIDS and TB pandemic devastating families across Khayelitsha.

We recognised a growing vulnerability among children — those facing loss, illness, and abuse — and decided to build a sanctuary for them. Based at Kuyasa Primary School, we have grown into a true community pillar, serving Makhaza, Harare, Kuyasa, Zwezwe, and Monwabisi Park.

We believe in local talent. By recruiting staff and volunteers directly from our streets, we ensure our impact is both authentic and genuinely sustainable for generations to come.

— Siyakhathala Vision Statement

Our Mission

Five pillars that guide every decision we make, every programme we run, and every child we serve.

01

Positive Influence

Creating a shield against negative peer pressures like crime and substance abuse.

02

Academic Excellence

Guiding children through Grade 12 and into the doors of tertiary education.

03

Character Building

Developing the next generation of responsible adults and community change-agents.

04

Breaking Stigma

Removing barriers and negative labels often placed on orphaned children.

05

Capacity Building

Investing in the growth of our staff, volunteers, and all beneficiaries.

Our Programmes

01

Children's Outings

We organise fun, educational outings to give children joyful experiences, build lasting memories, and offer a meaningful break from daily challenges.

Every outing is a reminder to our children that they are seen, loved, and worthy of celebration.

02

Food Gardening

Our sustainable gardening programme teaches children and community members to grow fresh, organic food — supporting nutrition, wellbeing, and long-term self-reliance.

Holiday Programme

During school holidays we run engaging programmes with activities, structured learning, play, and daily meals — keeping children safe, stimulated, and supported.

04

Food Parcels

We distribute food parcels to vulnerable families and children in our community, ensuring that no one goes without essential nutrition. This vital programme provides dignity and relief to those who need it most.

Every parcel is packed with care and delivered with compassion — a small act that makes a profound difference in the lives of the families we serve.

Youth Development & IDT Partnership

Through our valued partnership with the Independent Development Trust (IDT), we create real, life-changing opportunities for unemployed youth in our community.

  • Opportunities at Northlink College to study solar panel installation and related skills
  • Recruitment of unemployed youth as assistant teachers in primary schools
  • IDT provides stipends to our dedicated volunteers
